Prevent Damaged Hair: 10 Do' and Don'ts

Damaged hair is common to women. The salon is our home away from home. With services such as highlights, hair coloring, perms and straighteners, it's as tempting as a candy store. However, this guilty pleasure is responsible for the damaged hair we hate so much. Thanks to my hairdresser, below are 10 do's and don'ts to prevent damaged hair.

  1. Do use ionic products to prevent damaged hair: There have been many advances in hair technology. One of the most influential ones in heat styling is ionic technology. Ionic technology works with heat to restore damaged hair.

Popular products such as the T3 Tourmaline hair dryer and Sedu flat iron use ionic technology. These products are great to prevent and heal damaged hair because they make heat styling good for your hair.

As you blow dry or flat iron, you are actually infusing healing moisture into hair and reversing the effects of dry, damaged hair. Upgrade your heat styling tools to ionic ones to prevent damaged hair.

  2. Don't buy cheap brushes and combs: Cheap styling tools is a leading cause in split ends and damaged hair; brushes and combs with hard bristles easily snag, rip and break hair. They wear away hair's cuticle leaving it weak and damaged.

Buy a brush or comb with quality. Since these are products you use every day it's worth the investment. It will also save you from damaged hair. Use a wide tooth comb to de-tangle hair. These combs are specifically designed to de-tangle hair with ease and without the breakage. For brushes, ones with a cushion base and ball tip bristle are best to prevent damaged hair.

  3. Do Prep your hair before you heat style: It's essential to prep your hair before you heat style. Your hair is at its weakest state when it's wet. Never apply direct heat on unprotected wet hair. This will damage and literally fry hair's cuticle. Apply a protective leave-in conditioner to wet hair and wait until your hair is 75% dry before you blow dry or heat style. My hairdresser recommends H2 Ion.

H2Ion is a 1-min heat activated leave in conditioner. It uses heat from your blow dryer or flat iron to revitalize damaged hair. It also uses ionic technology to seal damaged cuticles and infuse moisture to damaged hair. Your hair is left soft and silky.

  4. Don't use products containing alcohol: Products containing alcohol make hair dry, damaged, and frizzy. Use alcohol free gels, mousse and hair sprays. Go even further by substituting gels with pomades and hair waxes. They will hold hair in place and add moisture to hair. Products containing jojoba oil, aloe vera, and silk protein are great to restore moisture to dry damaged hair.

  5. Do deep condition hair once a week: Environmental damage affects hair year round. Hot and cold weather are responsible for dry, brittle, and damaged hair. To prevent hair damage by harsh weather conditions, it's important to use a deep conditioner treatment once a week. You can also use H2 Ion as a deep conditioner treatment since results lasts for two weeks.

Now you have what it takes to prevent damaged hair; but wait there are more hair essential do's and don'ts you can't miss! Read on.
